Sustainable Fairfax

Sustainable Fairfax is coming out of its chrysalis. In an effort to be more effective, we’ve spent the last two years refining our vision and recreating our organization. Due to this commitment we scaled back our projects and remained focused on a subset including local energy issues, local candidate surveys and lending our support to local ordinances. Armed with new skills and vision we are committed to do our part in guiding Fairfax toward a sustainable future that benefits our economy, environment and community.

As one of the first groups in Marin to pioneer sustainability, Sustainable Fairfax has a legacy of educating the town council, supporting the community, providing services to the town, and conducting educational events since 1999. Through our work, we’ve come to realize that sustainability is not just an end goal, but also an approach to decision making. Now it’s time to reaffirm our mission and build Sustainable Fairfax in a sustainable way.

This year the board has been meeting with our new Executive Director, Pam Hartwell-Herrero, to iron out our new model that blends education and community action. Here are some ways to get involved:

  • Want to implement sustainability in your own backyard? Join us for a hands-on class that will transform the backyard of 141 Bolinas into a Permaculture demonstration site. We will cover soil building, creating a food forest, building a cob structure, and other elements of home-scale permaculture. Course specifications TBA.
  • Do you have experience with Curriculum for educating on Sustainability or know of some good educators? We are developing a program that will educate members of the public to think and act more sustainably. These participants will then volunteer their time to implement community Sustainability projects.
  • Interested in being on the Board? We need additional Board members who will design the sustainability curriculum, define our retail space, start fundraising, and establish the financial model of Sustainable Fairfax. We are especially looking for people who have experience with treasury and fundraising.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please email Pam.

You'll work from 9am - 12 noon on Wednesdays during the school year at the Native Plant Nursery in Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park. SPAWN's Water Quality Testing Program

The Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN) has resumed their Water Quality Monitoring in Marin's Lagunitas Watershed. This program is funded through a grant from the Regional Water Quality Control Board 319h program and will continue for two years.

The program will test for: Fecal Coliforms, Nitrates + Nitrites, Orthophosphates in winter and summer and PH, Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen and Temperature year round. (They intend to add more testing parameters and sites as more funding is secured.)

If you are interested in participating in this program, please email them.

SPAWN is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting threatened coho salmon and steelhead trout and the environment on which we all depend. The protection of these keystone species leads to the protection of all wildlife of our community, and indeed the protection of ourselves and the land on which we live.
